New Young Assistant Instructors will Coach and Inspire more Young People into the Sport

  • Young "AIs"

"The young learn best from the young," says Chief Instructor, Richard McCulloch as six teenage sailors gained their qualification to be Assistant Instructors in dinghy sailing at Llangorse Sailing Club. "They are now an essential part of our RYA Recognised Training Centre (RTC) team, which delivers dinghy sailing courses meeting the highest RYA standards."

"AIs" - as they're known - play a vital role in training - supporting Dinghy Instructors, "DIs" in delivering training. Richard continues, "We have a growing number of children and young people coming-through - and they're visibly inspired by young instructors whom they not only look-up to, but speak the same language. And, of course, being an instructor will be real accolade for the AI's CVs!"

In order to become an Assistant Instructor, trainee AIs have to prove high standards in their sailing and boat-handling, they are trained to teach - using the prescribed RYA methods and process - and they have a first-aid qualification too.

"But it's their one-to-one - or group - communication skills which will be especially valuable in introducing more young people to the sport. I congratulate them," Richard says, "- And look forward to working with them in the future."
