Four more Assistant Instructors beefs-up the training team
As an RYA Recognised Training Centre, Llangorse Sailing Club has expanded its training team as 4 sailors have been formally trained as Assistant Instructors.
Chief Instructor, Richard McCulloch says, “AIs (Assistant Instructors) are vital to the training team in providing direct, interactive training for trainees of all ages. Not only do they need to be highly competent dinghy sailors, but they also must be great communicators, able to teach, and demonstrate sailing theory on-the-water.”
Parts of their sailing competence training, AIs need to show they can sail a sailing dinghy backwards and sail a triangular course of all points-of-sailing without a rudder. Newly qualified AI, Guy Davison says, “These are challenging, but great fun and very useful things to be able to do!”
For those who are curious: rudderless sailing is achieved using careful sail-trim and making use of the hull-shape by boat-trim to steer the boat.
Richard adds, “Learning how to instruct is a great way to improve your sailing skills and increase your confidence. We’ll welcome others who would like to join the team as an AI.”
