Getting people – young or old - on the water, having fun – safely – in sailing dinghies, is what we’re all about!

"Look at the burgee on top of the mast!" - a Llangorse instructor guides a trainee on sail-trimming

We have what it takes to make this happen: an enclosed lagoon for the little ones - or the bigger-but-bashful – to take the first wobbly steps. And, as an inland lake, we have a superb place to learn – safe from tides, currents and the open-sea.

We have a fleet of four different types of sailing boats for training: Oppies for the smallest young ones (starting at about 8 years of age) – and the Oppies’ full racing version the Optimist. Children progress into Toppers – with two rig-sizes – and when they become more proficient, the RS Fevas – the young-peoples’ double-hander with a spinnaker. Adults learn on our seven Comet Trios – in which an instructor can guide within the boat with two trainees, before stepping-out at the right moment when the trainees are ready to take control.

Finally, we have a team of RYA qualified instructors: Assistant Instructors (known as “AIs”), Dinghy Instructors (“DIs”), and Senior Instructors (“SIs”). These are led by our Chief Instructor and a Training Principal. All are volunteers but possess the same qualifications as professionals.

Llangorse Sailing Club has been an RYA Recognised Training Centre (RTC) since 2002. This means that we comply with the RYA’s formal training standards – and our site, facilities, team qualifications, boats and equipment are annually assessed by the RYA. It also means that we follow the RYA’s formal curricula – and that the qualifications gained at Llangorse are formally valid worldwide.

The Club runs a programme of courses following the RYA syllabus for adults and for young people. This includes an annual summer Training Week - often enjoyed by the whole family.

We have created “Development Days” to enable trainees to consolidate their learning, gain more experience and confidence following a course – using the club training boats and with instructor and safety-boat support. These are free to members who have undertaken a course, reaching a given level.
