Former Llangorse Junior is a World Champion!

A new World champion started his sailing as a junior at Llangorse Sailing Club. Many older members may remember Martin Wrigley who sailed his Optimist indefatigably in the early-to-mid 2000’. Martin (from Herefordshire – and who’s name was pronounced the French way) – has just become the 470 class World Champion in Japan.

Long-time member, Matt Butler recalls “Martin started at LSC very young, and was seen regularly at the front of the start-line in his Optimist amongst the bigger boats.” Matt adds, “I also let him helm in my new Fireball, and he fearlessly pointed it into gaps I wouldn’t have dreamed of with great skill! He’s a fabulous guy, and someone I’m so pleased to have achieved his ultimate goal.”

You can read the 470 World Championships report in Yachts and Yachting magazine here:

Llangorse lost Martin when has family moved to a club which could offer him all-year-round sailing, more intense competition and access to national squads.

Martin was always supported by his proud and determined father, Nigel. Sadly Nigel died after the family left Llangorse, but many remember the intense parental support Nigel provided to his son.
